It’s not been a particularly great season for Wayne Rooney and questions about his future hang over his head. But off the pitch he’s now not even the richest footballer in Britain!

Rooney might still be captain for club and country but his future wearing the armband for Manchester United and England seems very short term.

For United he’s only started 11 Premier League games this season and despite breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s record goalscoring tally this year he’s only bagged seven goals this term.

There are rumours that he could move to China or America or return to Everton in the summer, either of the first two moves would all but all time on his England career.

Rooney has long been the top wealthiest football player in The Sunday Times sport rich list but this year he’s been overtaken by his teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Englishman’s wealth is up £11 million to £93 million but it still leaves him £17 million his teammate who only moved to Britain last July.

Both men find themselves behind the leader of the pack Lewis Hamilton, despite not winning the F1 title last year the Mercedes driver gained £25 million to a staggering £131 million.

Fellow F1 driver Jenson Button, mostly retired but racing in Monaco at the end of the month, is in fourth place behind United’s front line, up £9 million to £86 million.

Rory McIlroy makes up the top five, the Northern Irish golfer made the biggest leap on the top 10 list earning £26 million more to £82 million.

Knight of the realm Andy Murray takes the sixth spot with £77 million and is followed by the first of two football managers in Manchester, Jose Mourinho on £61 million.

Gareth Bale is next on the list with ‘just’ £54 million and the top 10 is finished off by basketball star Luol Deng and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, both on £50 million!

Nice work if you can get it!
